Capitainer, a leading Swedish medtech company specialising in advanced self-sampling solutions, has recruited Johan Olausson as an applications specialist in clinical chemistry. Through his deep knowledge and experience gained from working with several leading diagnostics suppliers for central laboratories, Capitainer will increase the pace of development of new test protocols for the company’s products.
Johan Olausson has held diverse roles within research and clinical diagnostics since 2005, with a focus on clinical chemistry. Besides employment as hospital biochemist at Östersund Hospital in Sweden, he has held various positions in several leading diagnostics companies. These include the position of assay manager at Roche, senior scientist and product manager at Fiomi and key account manager at Beckman. Most recently, Johan Olausson held the role of clinical assays manager at Siemens Healthineers.
Capitainer currently has several different initiatives and collaboration agreements in place with clinical laboratories. A recently published research article showed that Capitainer’s sampling cards, which are built upon qDBS technology, can be used on common routine instruments in central laboratories for diabetes monitoring via the marker HbA1c. Capitainer will now broaden that work to include additional tests and different diagnostic platforms, with the goal to offer ready-made protocols that will allow laboratories to perform a variety of tests using Capitainer’s qDBS products.
“The demand for ready-made protocols for analysis on existing instruments at the laboratories is great. Johan’s knowledge greatly strengthens Capitainer’s ability to develop these protocols and to support laboratories in their own method development, which will accelerate the use of our technology in clinical diagnostics,” says Mikael Ström, Business Development Manager at Capitainer.
“It feels incredibly exciting and fun to be able to contribute to increased access to self-sampling for patients and caregivers together with Capitainer. What has previously been shown with other tests based qDBS is really inspiring and we have already come a long way in the development of several new important tests,” says Johan Olausson.

Capitainer AB is a Swedish medtech company founded in 2016. Capitainer develops and sells intelligent solutions for self-sampling of blood, plasma, and urine. The company has developed unique technologies for collecting an exact amount of fluid and then allowing it to dry. The sample card can be sent with regular mail to laboratories without needing refrigerated transports or special packaging. The precision and accuracy in Capitainer’s samples are market-leading and perform on the same level as established pipetting methods. The products can be applied within several market segments, for instance, clinical biomarkers, therapeutic drug monitoring, genomics, drug development, drug abuse and doping testing, and R&D and clinical studies.
