HbA1c
HbA1c, also referred to as hemoglobin A1c or glycated hemoglobin, is a blood test that reflects an individual’s average blood glucose levels over the past two to three months. As glucose circulates in the bloodstream, it binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. The HbA1c test measures the proportion of hemoglobin that has glucose attached, providing a reliable indicator of long-term blood sugar control. As red blood cells have a lifespan of approximately three months, HbA1c offers a stable measure of glycemic status over time.

Decentralized HbA1c testing
Capitainer enables accurate and patient-friendly self-sampling devices for a wide range of applications – including HbA1c testing for long-term glucose monitoring. HbA1c is an important biomarker for assessing glycemic control and managing conditions such as diabetes, where regular monitoring is essential.
Home-based sampling can enable more frequent testing and support improved patient compliance, while facilitating flexible care models beyond traditional clinical settings.
Application Note
This document presents a comprehensive overview of both published and unpublished evidence, along with protocols for testing HbA1c using Capitainer sampling cards. It outlines how the testing process can be implemented across various standard clinical chemistry platforms and highlights key considerations and precautions that must be taken into account.
